Expanded CDCP Eligibility: What You Need to Know

We are pleased to announce that eligibility for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) will be expanding in May 2025, providing increased access to dental care for patients ages 18-64. If your household has filed your 2024 tax returns and received the Notice of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency, you may be eligible to apply for CDCP coverage once applications open for your age group.

To ensure you have ample time for approval before scheduling treatments, we recommend submitting your application early. Please note that CDCP coverage must be renewed annually based on the previous year’s household tax return, or there will be a gap in your coverage.

Additionally, if you plan to use this benefit, please be aware that the predetermination process for dental treatments can take up to 12 weeks. Our team is here to assist you throughout the process and answer any questions you may have. Feel free to reach out to us for more information on this expanded eligibility

Dental Myth Busters: How High Is Your Dental IQ?

At Okanagan Dentistry, we love helping our patients separate fact from fiction when it comes to oral health. There’s a lot of misinformation out there, so let’s clear a few things up!

Myth #1: Sugar causes cavities.

Truth: Sugar plays a role, but is not the only villain!  The bacteria in your mouth feed on sugars (yes, from candy, but also from everyday foods like bread, crackers, and even some fruits). creating acid that damages enamel. Brushing and flossing are key to removing excess sugars in the mouth!

Myth #2: Brushing harder = cleaner teeth.

Truth: Gentle brushing is best. Scrubbing your teeth like you’re cleaning grout might seem effective, but it can actually damage your enamel and gums. Overbrushing can lead to tooth sensitivity and gum recession - not fun.

Myth #3: Teeth whitening weakens enamel.

Truth: Your teeth have tiny pores - just like your skin! That’s where stains settle in, and whitening products work by gently lifting them out, without weakening your enamel.  Some people can be prone to sensitivity after whitening though, so make sure to discuss this with your oral health professional.

Have a myth you’ve heard and want us to bust? Let us know at your next visit—we’d love to feature it in our next newsletter!
