Ian was born and raised in Kelowna and comes from a dental family. His father Mac practiced dentistry in Kelowna for 37 years and both Ian's wife Theresa and his sister Melanie are dental hygienists. Ian has been a dentist in Kelowna since graduating from dental school at UBC in 1983.
Ian has always been passionate about dentistry and his desire to provide his patients with the highest quality possible. Since graduating from university, he has been an avid student of dentistry wanting to stay on the cutting edge with the most modern techniques and procedures. He has been a member of numerous clinical study groups throughout his career. These have included particular focus on crown and bridge work, esthetic dentistry, dental implants, veneers, gold fillings, gum grafting and full mouth reconstruction (smile makovers). Ian has studied under the guidance of world renowned clinical educators Dr. John Kois, Dr. Norm Ickert and Dr. Richard V. Tucker. Ian attained mentor status in 2010 from the Kois Centerin Seattle after completing 4 years of study to learn the latest advances in esthetic, implant, and restorative dentistry. He is also a member of the Academy of Osseointegration which keeps him current with all aspects of implant dentistry.
Throughout his career as a dentist, Ian has served on numerous committees for the B.C College of Dental Surgeons, the B.C. Dental Association and the Okanagan College Dental Assistants Program. He was instrumental in the development of the Gospel Mission Dental Clinic which provides free dental services to the underprivileged in Kelowna. Ian is currently a part time clinical instructor for the UBC Faculty of Dentistry.
In recognition for his contributions to the dental profession and our community Ian has been awarded fellowships in the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Ian has also received Awards of Merit from both the B.C. Dental Association and the College of Dental Surgeons of B.C.
Personally, Ian loves a wide range of sports including snow skiing, all water sports, kayaking, paddleboarding, golfing, and back country hiking. When he was younger he was an avid rugby player finishing his career with the U.B.C Thunderbirds. He was selected to try out for Canada’s national team but instead he chose to protect his hands for dentistry! Ian and his wife Theresa have 3 daughters who all currently live out east pursuing their education while adding sons and grandchildren to their family.
Ian considers it an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to provide quality dentistry. He sees this as a great responsibility which motivates him to approach each and every patient as if they are one of his own family. He is passionate about his career; it is more of a calling in life and an art to him rather than a job. He especially loves the relationships he has developed with his patients and staff over the years. Meeting new people and improving their lives through dentistry is a privilege that Ian welcomes each and every day!
